20 lbs of organic, vine-ripened tomatoes, zucchini, Swiss chard, and basil was grown and donated by the RUrbanPIoneers Community Gardeners Amusa Adebayo, James Feezor, Sean Keating, MaryBeth Radeck, and the Institute of Continued Learning at Roosevelt University. The group also collected and delivered three bags of groceries and an additional 100 lbs of produce including broccoli, green beans, potatoes, onions, cucumbers, and some well-timed pumpkins.
According to Mary Jo Imperato, Director of Welfare Services at Hanover Township and head of the program, those her pantry serves “very much appreciate fresh produce because we receive very little fresh fruits and veggies”. Imperato’s son also happens to be a student at Roosevelt University.
The pantry serves 1,000 families per month and up to 40 families on Saturdays alone. They are supported through generous community donations, with much of what stocks their shelves and refrigerators donated by the Northern Illinois Food Bank and Jewel Food Stores.
If you are interested in donating, visit the Hanover Township Food Pantry, open Tuesdays from 1 – 6pm, Wednesdays – Fridays from 11 – 3pm. and Saturdays from 9 – noon.
